By-election called by Labour to divert attention from budget

6.00.00pm GMT Thu 26th Jan 2006

The by-election to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Cllr Philip Stamford-Bewlay has been called by the Labour Party for Thursday, March 2nd. The Labour Party called for the by-election within a few days of Cllr Stamford-Bewlay's funeral.

Since the Labour Party cannot win in College Ward, their motive for calling the by-election so quickly can only be seen as a cynical attempt to divert the attention of Liberal Democrat and Conservative Councillors away from the impending debate on the Labour Council's budget proposals.
