Lib Dem pressure secures new Beat Officer

2.00.00pm GMT Thu 15th Dec 2005

When the North Road Ward policeman left early in 2005, nobody was posted to replace him. Cllr Fred Lawton wanted to know why one of the largest wards in the town should be without its own police officer. He arranged a meeting with the Police Inspector responsible for Beat Officers, where he and Cllr Steve Jones pressed the case for North Road Ward. Following the meeting, PC Graeme Hopkirk was assigned to North Road Ward.

PC Hopkirk has been working on the successful West Side Project and has experience of the sort of problems we have in North Road. He and Stuart Jubb, the Police Community Support Officer, have been patrolling the ward to demonstrate a police presence. They want to meet the people of the area - so don't hesitate to approach them with any problems, or just to say hello.
